But, before she found her niche in those genres, she wrote straight up contemporary romance novels. I snapped up every single one of them on that table. I collect old books, which everyone already knows, but mainly, as a huge fan of this author, I thought it would be fun to collect some of her books written BEFORE she became such a famous author.
I had never read any of them, so I was very curious about them. So, when I went in search of a few holiday related stories for my Flashback Friday feature on my blog, it gave me the perfect opportunity to sample one of these older books by SB.
The cover for this book is so pretty, with that deep red color and the beautiful fonts, and it is a short book, and had a pretty good rating average on GR, which made it seem like the perfect choice. I have a high tolerance for dated material, if it is limited to fashions, popular phrases of the day, older technology, etc. This one, however, was cringe worthy. The basic set-up is that on Christmas Eve, Taylor, the mayor-elect, and Ria have a one- night stand which results in a pregnancy.
Ria felt it was her moral obligation to inform Taylor he was about to become a father. Eventually, he calms down, and Ria explains that due to her upbringing, having a child born legitimately was very important to her.
So, they get married, but in name only- or that was the initial agreement, at any rate. Otherwise, Taylor seemed to always keep Ria on the defensive and she remained prickly throughout the entire novel. So, to me, the chemistry was mostly sexual, with very little emotional sentiments either said or demonstrated. The story is old fashioned, which is to be expected with a book that was written over thirty years ago. The story begins on Christmas Eve and then concludes with a little after Christmas gift giving, which was utterly preposterous.
However, this one was a dud. View all 29 comments. Nov 06, Erin rated it liked it Shelves: The only thing Christmas-y is a Christmas Eve one night stand.
Sandra Brown probably already had this book written and just gave it a Christmas-y title. For that reason I deducted a Star from my rating. This book was published in and it shows.
I'll just let that breathe. I ra 3rd Xmas Read? I rate Christmas books on a curve but Tidings of Great Joy isn't a Christmas book so I gave it 3 stars, which is a decent rating. I just wish I hadn't been led to believe it was a Christmas book. If you want a Christmas Romance this is not your book but if you want a straight up romance with a couple hot sex scenes this is for you.
A book set in the decade you were born View all 10 comments. By far one of the worst books by Sandra Brown. Just no!! My heart is somewhat angry at this book right now!!! View 1 comment. Feb 08, Saly rated it really liked it Shelves: Rating 3. The hero did act out a bit in the start, mainly due to shock but countered they should get married now and not at the end.
Mis-understandings abound as usual but we get a HEA. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. I won this book through Goodreads First Reads contest. I've read several Sandra Brown books and this book isn't anyway near my top 5 of Sandra Brown's books but it's a quick and sweet read that gives you high emotions, sneaky first sight love people don't want to admit to themselves, pregnancy after a one night stand and so on.
It was written in the end of the 80's and it had a really strong feel of it, made me giggle a bit to read the descriptions of the clothes and rooms but I still enjoyed it.
There were some things that were slightly annoying - marriage just because of the baby, Taylor's reaction to pregnancy, the whole weirdness about the relationship with Lisa but easy to overlook when enjoying a quick break from the reality BUT the ending kind of ruined everything.
It was all good till the baby - how Taylor got the baby, how he presents her to Ria, no discussion with Ria beforehand. This is not a way to deal with miscarriage. I'm a avid re-reader and I'm probably gonna read some emotional scenes again and again but I will never ever be able to read the end without getting angry. Sandra Brown. Great gift!
Although this storyline was a little predictable I enjoyed every word. Like a fairy tale for the holidays, it had a happy ending.
Sometimes you just need a light, predictable, feel good romance. Can be easily read in a day or a weekend. I should've finished this yesterday, but life got in the way. I hate when that happens! Dec 27, Amanda rated it it was ok. I liked the book up to the last couple of pages, in the end he adopts a baby with out even talking to her about it.
It wasn't like she wasnt capable of having her own child after her misscarriage. I believe adopting kids is great but after a misscarriage I feel like it was insulting to her to adopt a kid behind her back What the hell?
Its like "Here honey, since you couldn't handle the job of birthing my baby. I decided to pick one up on the way home from work, ho I liked the book up to the last couple of pages, in the end he adopts a baby with out even talking to her about it. View 2 comments. This book was better than I expected. I really enjoyed it even thug it had a bit of stereotypical characters and plot. The plot did take a unexpected twist though and that really made it more interesting.
The book is very character driven and while I enjoyed reading about the characters, I did not love them and they acted really foolish sometimes. This is not my favourite that I have read by Sandra Brown but it was an alright and entertaining book. Jan 22, Heather Tiedtke rated it really liked it.
I received this book as a goodreads giveaway. I'm not a fast reader but this book was so sweet that I couldn't put it down. Of course it was predictable but the writing was so good that it didn't matter. I intend to read more Sandra Brown for sure. Jul 17, Andrea rated it it was amazing.
I loved this book I was crying my eyes out and laughing at the same time as I Read the last page. I loved how the miscarriage brought the leads closer together instead of throwing them apart in despair and regret.
This was an early Sandra Brown romance that I found on the book sale table at the library. Last edited by ImportBot.
